The construction sector having a share of nearly 35% is one of the main responsible parties leading to depletion of fossil resources and progression of global warming as a serious threat for our world. The good news is that sustainability and environmental consciousness have started to become (an element of high priority in the construction industry). While green buildings with low energy consumption is encouraged with the internationally accepted green building certificates like LEED and BREEAM... it is also targeted to develop the concept of sustainability throughout the entire sector. The construction material producers are also required to keep up with this new dynamics in the sector and adopt innovative productions with the least environmental damage and the least depletion of resources.
As a pioneer producer in its field of activity, Onduline Avrasya A.S has also acted with the sense of leadership in respect of the concept of sustainability; it has accommodated itself to the conditions of this emerging market and has evaluated the environmental impacts of its products and productions under the scope of 3 separate studies.
→ “Recycled Content”

Recycling 30.000 tons of cellulose wastes every year, Onduline Avrasya uses post-consumer recycled content at the rate of ~50% in its material groups including bituminous roofing sheets (ONDULINE CLASSIC), bituminous roofing tiles (ONDUVILLA) and underlays (ISOLINE RUFOLINE).
The producers can make self-declarations for their environmental claims related with their products in accordance with ISO 14021. However, it is of no doubt that verification of such claims and their certification by an accredited independent body proves the reliability of these environmental attributes. One of these bodies, the American body that is internationally-recognized in the field of certification of environmental claims, i.e. ICC-ES (International Code Council-Evaluation Service) has independently and impartially evaluated and certified the recycled content of Onduline Group’s products, under the scope of its VAR Environmental Program. This verification process has been conducted for all Onduline production plants and facilities located all over the world.
With the “recycled content” report no. VAR-1016 issued by ICC-ES, the ‘recycled content’ attribute of Onduline products has been verified.
→ Carbon Footprint
Onduline Group has conducted a comprehensive “carbon footprint balance sheet” study in order to raise the awareness related with greenhouse gas emissions originating from all its products and activities and to fulfil its liabilities for global warming and environmental issues by taking the strategic measures.
“Bilan Carbone: Carbon footprint balance sheet”, the widely used method developed by French environment and energy management agency (ADEME ) evaluates the products on the life cycle basis and covers the emissions originating from the corporate activities as well.
First of all, Onduline sheet produced in France was evaluated according to the ADEME method. The study covers the emissions occurring from: Raw materials, Energy, Refrigerant fluids, Sheet and accessory manufacturing, Packaging, Wastes, Freight, Corporate activities (travels of the employees, administrative office energy consumption, etc.), end of life of the product and disposal.
According to this balance sheet prepared using the production and activity data for the year 2009, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission is 7726 g CO2e./sheet (per sheet) and 4066 g CO2e./m2 (per square meter) throughout the entire life cycle of Onduline Sheet. These values show lower emission values compared to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of various roofing products that are widely used.
‘Raw materials’, one of the main responsible factors of emission, account for 23,3% of the total emission. The fact that recycled fibre composing 50% of the total product has zero carbon emission, allows Onduline to have lower carbon emission by more than 33,5 % per sheet. Energy, another important item, accounts for 22,1%.
End-of-life and disposal represent the largest share of 33,4%. However, there is a critical problem related with determination of this item. While real data are used for the other items, concrete information related with the disposal of Onduline sheets was not available; therefore, a general assumption was made according to ‘ADEME national average disposal’ method. As a consequence, the margin of error and the total value were found quite higher due to the assumption.
The transportation item accounts for only 14% since it is a light material.
Under ISO 14064 Scope 2, this study was adapted to all Onduline factories and plants. It was determined that Onduline Avrasya production plant has the least emission per sheet among all Onduline plants. For more information: firstname.lastname@example.org
→ Environmental product declaration (EPD)
Among all environmental labels and declarations covered by ISO 14020 series of standards, the Type III ‘Environmental Product Declaration’ (EPD) made according to ISO 14025 assesses all environmental impacts of a product over its entire life cycle, called as from cradle to grave.
Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD);
* It is comparable. It evaluates the entire life cycle of the products and provides their environmental impacts with quantifiable parameters.
* It is reliable. It is not a self-declaration of the producer like the other environmental claims (Carbon footprint). It is obliged to be verified by 3rd parties.
* It provides complete and precise results. Since it is based on life cycle analysis (LCA), it is a long process, but provides precise data.
The ‘Environmental Product Declaration’ study is carried out for our products produced in Sapanca selected as the pilot project under the expertise of PE International.

How do our products contribute to achieving LEED certification?
LEED MR Credit 4 Recycled Content: Our products listed in the recycled content report issued by ICC-ES meet the requirements for achievement of the LEED’s credit under the Materials & Resources part thanks to their high recycled content ratio.
LEED MR Credit 5 Regional Materials: The places of extraction of raw materials used in our products and our place of manufacture of such products are substantially within 500 miles of the project. According to the location of your project, the requirements for achievement of the LEED’s credit.
