ARDOISE System with ISOLINE

ARDOISE slate roofing system with ISOLINE System

Documentation

ARDOISE is the French term for a natural stone which geologists denominate as “slate” or “schiefer” in German. Slate roofs form an attractive prestigious roof covering whose durability has been proved over hundreds of years of use in Europe. This experience guarantees an attractive long lasting roof covering.

General Characteristics

Slate is a quarried natural stratitified stone which is hewn into thin plates of 5 to 7mm in thickness. Conventional slate roofing systems are formed from two overlapping layers laid with wide end laps. As a result, the system requires a considerable number of expensive slates per m² in order to form a finished roof. For this reason, asphalt shingles have been developed as the economic and popular imitation of the slate roof finish.

Advantages

Advanced batten system
The slates are laid over the ISOLINE underlay roofing sheet using specially designed battens which provide stability to the slates, which are in turn secured by unique interlocking hooks. It is therefore not necessary to form a hole in the slate and fix with conventional nails or screws. The handling and fixing of the product is therefore made easy resulting in a quick installation time.

Material economy
ISOLINE is the established market leading corrugated tile underlay system for clay and concrete roof tiles. Now by using the ISOLINE special batten and slate clip system the same enhanced weathering performance can also be applied to slate roofs and significantly reduce costs by decreasing the number of slates required.

Example: The typical slate requirement for covering a conventional double lapped 1m roof surface is nominal 2.4m² of slates. In comparison to only 1.18m² of slate using the ISOLINE system, thus reducing slate usage by 50% producing a substantial cost saving.

Lightweight roof
The reduction in the number of slates required to cover the roof also provides a substantial reduction in the weight the roof is subjected too.

Example: The weight of a traditionally laid slate roof being nominally 30-35 kg/m²; whilst the weight of an ISOLINE slate system roof is only 16 kg/m². Nowadays, despite the high initial cost of natural slate roofing products it is being increasingly selected in preference to more modern clay, concrete and metal lapped roofing materials. The reason for this choice is the classical aesthetic quality natural slate imparts on modern architectural projects.

Safe, easy and quick installation
The advanced batten design provides increased wind uplift resistance by retaining each slate tightly in place. The modular design of the batten system saves considerable time in aligning and fixing the slates. Slate is a very strong material and it is difficult to damage under normal conditions however, should accidental damage occur not only does the ISOLINE sheet provide assured secondary weathering but it's unique hook retaining system allows a single slate to be simply replaced without the need to disturb adjacent overlapping slates, as required on a conventionally laid slate roof.

The contribution of the modern technology to the prestige of the natural material
The ISOLINE system is the perfect blend of modern technology with traditional natural material. The combination of natural slate and advanced ISOLINE forms the ideal roof covering, requiring fewer slates and making fixing easier and faster, producing a prestigious, durable and easily maintained roof covering.

Applications

Residential

ISOLINE System with ARDOISE is an attractive complete system for those who want to create an outstanding roof covered with a natural material like ARDOISE slates.

Institutional

Nowadays despite the high initial costs of natural slate roofing products, there is a trend for ARDOISE to be selected in preference to modern clay tiles, concrete and metal lapped roofing materials.

Commercial

ISOLINE system with ARDOISE makes possible to save about 50% of the slate quantity compared to conventional system.

Installation

ISOLINE system with ARDOISE is easy to master. For a complete overview of the installation, please download our documentation.

EAVES DETAILS

1-Apply 20 cm wide ONDUBAND graphite aluminium at the eaves.

2- ISOLINE sheets should be installed with one cm of overhang.

3- ISOLINE sheets should be installed on thereading direction of Isoline mark.

4-The advanced battens should be nailed to the line markes with ”A” on ISOLINE sheet on top of the corrugations.

The site without claw must be aligned with the line and minimum of four points of fixation is necessary . The advanced buttons should not be fixed at the part where it is mentioned “NO FIXING HERE”.

5- Stagger by 12,5 cm the clever battens in every row.

6- The hooks can be fixed before or after installation of the battens.

7- The ARDOISE is placed between 2 hooks and slides over the hook of the preceeding batten. A “click” sound is to be heart after the slate is seated.

RIDGE DETAIL

1- A wooden lath of 3x3 cm is nailed to both sides of the ridge.

2- The ridge is insulated for water by using ONDUBAND or ONDULAIR.

3- Cut the slates from the front level of the lath and finish covering the roof.

4- Two ridge fixing devices per ridge cover is fixed to the OSB decking in every 70 cm.

5- The ridge cover is installed. The cut corner should be at the upper side.

6- Ridge covers are fixed to the ridge fixing devices by pressing down with an overlapping of 5 mm.
